Disney names exec VP of production

Tony To to oversee studio’s live-action slate

The Walt Disney Studios has tapped Tony To as executive VP of production, a post through he will oversee all aspects of physical production for the studios’ live-action feature film slate.

He replaces Bruce Hendricks, Disney’s president of physical production, who ankled the studio in February.

To, who had launched his own production shingle Ensemble Entertainment last year, has primarily focused on producing bigger budgeted TV series and mini-series, including HBO’s “From the Earth to the Moon,” “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” through which he worked closely with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. His feature credits include producing Carl Franklin’s thriller “One False Move.”

The relationship clearly helped To land the Disney job, given the Mouse House’s close ties with Hanks and Spielberg.

In addition to serving as co-executive producer on “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” To also directed episodes of the mini-series, as well as “House” and “Harsh Realm.”

To reports to Sean Bailey, Disney’s president of production.

“Tony is a gifted producer and director with an incredible wealth of experience working with the best filmmakers in the world,” Bailey said. “He’s one of the most dedicated and passionate producers I know. His unique point of view and deep working knowledge of the craft and the business are a perfect complement to our motion picture production team.”

My Take:

I am not exactly sure the circumstances to which Hendricks is being replaced, but I am excited to see how things change within Disney’s production. With Tony To as the VP of Production for Disney’s live action films, I am wondering if he will work exclusively for Disney’s name or for the other companies that they own such as ABC films or Marvel Entertainment. With To’s work experience especially with big names like Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, he is bound to do some great things. I am looking forward to his new projects.
